CRAPS

1. Introduction
This guide is to assist anyone wishing to learn how to deal Craps and explain the basics of the game as well as the payouts. The proper procedures for each position are included in the Policies and Procedures manual for Craps.

2. The Crew and Equipment
The crew on a Craps game consists of four dealers and a box person. There are three dealers on the game while the fourth person is on break. The box person is a floor supervisor that oversees the game.
  Dealers
One dealer is designated as the stickperson or “on the stick”. The other two dealers are “on Base”.
The stickperson calls the dice as they are rolled, passes the dice to the player throwing the dice (shooter), and places the proposition bets for the players. The stickperson stands on the opposite side of the table from the base dealers in the center of the table.
The base dealers stand on either side of the box (center of the table where the bankroll is located). Each base dealer covers one end of the layout and will make change for players as well as take, pay and place bets on their end.
The box person sits in front of the box between the base dealers.
  Equipment
Five Dice are used on each game. All five are offered to a new shooter which picks any two they want. The other three are retrieved by the stick person and kept in a bowl on the table.
The stick person uses a stick to push and retrieve dice on the table.
A bowl is used by the stick person to hold the dice that are not being used by the shooter.
The “puck” is a disc that is white on one side with the word ON to indicate what the Point is and the other side is black with the word OFF to show that a Point has not been established. There is a puck on each end of the table layout.
Lammers are used to indicate the status of certain bets. There are lammers for Buy, Lay, On, and Off.

3. Come Out Roll
The Come Out Roll is the most important roll in the game. A Come Out roll occurs whenever a Point has not been established. This occurs when:

  • A new shooter is given the dice and has not yet made their first throw. The shooter is said to be “Coming Out” and the first roll is a “Come Out” roll.
  • A shooter has rolled a 2, 3, 7, 11, or 12 on the first throw of the dice, or on the previous Come Out roll.
  • 7 or 11 is a winner on the Pass Line and the shooter now has a new Come out roll.
  • 2, 3, or 12 are losers on the Pass Line (Crapped Out) and the shooter has a new Come Out roll.
  • A shooter has rolled a Point number on the previous Come Out roll and repeats the number before rolling a 7. This is a Pass Line winner and the next roll is a Come Out roll.
  • A shooter has rolled a 7 before repeating the established Point number. The shooter is said to have “Sevened Out” and their shoot is over. The next roll of the dice by a new shooter is a Come Out roll.
  • The dealer will state that the odds are off on the Come Out roll unless otherwise specified.
Once the Point is established, it will be marked with the puck.

4. Pass Line Bets

The Pass Line Bet is made before the Come Out roll. Once the Point has been established, the Pass Line Bet must stay on the Pass Line. Money may be added to the Bet but it cannot be removed or reduced. The player is responsible for placing their bets.
Odds are an additional bet that may be placed behind the Pass Line Bet. However, there should not be any Odds behind the Pass Line on a Come Out roll. The Odds may be pulled at any time.
Pass Line Bet - table limits
Pass Line Odds - 3X (4 & 10), 4X (5 & 9), 5X (6 & 8)
Pass Line Payoff - even money
Pass Line Odds Payoff - 6 to 5 (6 & 8), 3 to 2 (5 & 9), 2 to 1 (4 & 10)

Pass Line 10 9 8 6 5 4
Odds 3X 4X 5X 5X 4X 3X
Payout 2 to 1 3 to 2 6 to 5 6 to 5 3 to 2 2 to 1
If the first roll is a 7 or 11, pay the Pass Line. If the first roll is a 2, 3 or 12 (Craps), take the Pass Line. If the first roll is a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, this becomes the Point. Mark the Point with the marker “ON”.
Once the Point is established, if a 7 is rolled, take the Pass Line (and Odds). If the Point is rolled, pay the Pass Line (and Odds) according to the above chart. Always pay the Odds first.
  Example:
Point is 8 and 8 is rolled.
Pass Line Bet is $10 with full Odds ($50).
Odds Payout: 6 to 5 ($60).
Pass Line Payout: even money ($10).
Total Pay Out - $70.
If the player has plenty of red checks, pay with 3 green and pull one red.)
Pay Out Shortcut: If the player has a Pass Line Bet with full Odds, pay the amount of the Bet 7X on any Point.

5. Field Bets

  Field Bets are one roll bets. They are paid even money for a 3, 4, 9, 10 or 11 and are paid 2X for a 2 and 3X for a 12. The Bet loses on a 5, 6, 7, or 8.
Field Bets are Self-Service Bets (the player is responsible for picking up their winnings).
  Example:
$10 Field Bet and 12 is rolled.
Payout: 3X the Bet ($30).

6. Place Bets

Players can make Bets on the 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10 as a Place Bet. The player decides which number(s) they want to make Bets on. Place the Bet on the lines for the number as shown above. (See the Geography section for the location of the Bet relative to the player’s position).
  Place Bet - table limits
Place Bet Payoff - 7 to 6 (6 & 8), 7 to 5 (5 & 9), 9 to 5 (4 & 10)

Place Bet 10 9 8 6 5 4
Pay Out 9 to 5 7 to 5 7 to 6 7 to 6 7 to 5 9 to 5
If the roll is a 7 take the Place Bets. If the roll hit’s the player’s number, pay the Bet according to the chart above.
The optimum Bet for 6 & 8 is in multiples of 6 (paid 7 for every 6).
  Example:
Place Bet is on 8 and 8 is rolled.
Place Bet is $12.
Odds Payout: 7 to 6 ($14).
(If the player has plenty of blue checks, pay with 3 red and ask the player to drop one blue.)

7. Come Bets

The Come Bet is the same as a Pass Line Bet but is made after a Point has been established. If the roll is a 7 or 11, pay the Come Line even money. If the roll is a 2, 3 or 12 (Craps), take the Come Line. In short, 7 or 11 wins and Craps loses.
If the roll is a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, move the Bet on the Come Line to the Place Bet area but inside the box for the number rolled as shown below (same Geography rules apply). The player may place Odds for that Bet with the same rules as a Pass Line Bet. The Bet is known as the Flat and the Odds are placed on top of the Flat and offset towards the stick.

  Come Bet - table limits
Come Bet Odds - 3X (4 &10), 4X (5 & 9), 5X (6 & 8)
Come Bet Payoff - even money
Come Bet Odds Payoff - 6 to 5 (6 & 8), 3 to 2 (5 & 9), 2 to 1 (4 & 10)

Pass Line 10 9 8 6 5 4
Odds 3X 4X 5X 5X 4X 3X
Pay Out 2 to 1 3 to 2 6 to 5 6 to 5 3 to 2 2 to 1
If a 7 is rolled, take the Come Bet (and Odds). If the Come Bet number is rolled, pay the Come Bet (and Odds) according to the above chart and give back the original Come Bet and Odds. However, if the player has another Come Bet on the Come Line, you can leave the original Bet (and Odds) as the Come Line Bet would be moved back to the same number that was just paid. This is called “Off and On”.
  Example:
    No new Come Bet
Come Bet is on 8 and 8 is rolled.
Come Bet is $10 with full Odds ($50).
Odds Payout: 6 to 5 ($60).
Flat Bet Payout: even money ($10).
Total Pay Out - $70.
Take the Come Bet and Odds down and pay them in the Come area.
    Off and On
Come Bet is on 8 and 8 is rolled with another Come Line Bet of $10.
Come Bet is $10 with full Odds ($50).
Odds Payout: 6 to 5 ($60).
Flat Bet Payout: even money ($10).
Total Pay Out - $70.
Pay the $70 to the player and leave the $10 Come Bet on the Come Line.
Leave the Come Bet and Odds on the 8 and just pay the $70 in the Come Area.

8. Proposition Bets

Proposition Bets can be made at any time. Some are one time Bets only and others will stay on. A player may make a specific Bet such as a “Craps 12” at 31 for 1 or a combination Bet such as "Any Craps" at 8 for 1. Some casinos offer "Strip" odds which are a little less than "Downtown" odds. Strips odds are 30 for 1 and 15 for 1 where Downtown odds are 31 for 1 and 16 for 1.
The "long way" to calculate the payout is to take what's on the bet times the payout and subtract the bet. This keeps the bet up to win again. There are "keys" to help calculate the payout which are explained below.
  a. C & E

C” is for Craps and “E” is for Eleven or “Yo“. You can place the Bet between the C & E if it is an odd amount or equal amounts on the C and E. This is a one roll Bet.
    Downtown Odds

Odds Payout: 5 to 6 ($25).
Don’t Come Bet Payout: even money ($10).
Total Pay Out - $35.
Pay the $35 and move the Don’t Come Line Bet behind the 8.

11. Big 6 and 8

Big 6 and 8 Bets are paid even money and are individual Bets. Pay the 6 if a 6 is rolled before a 7 and pay the 8 if an 8 is rolled before a 7. If a 7 is rolled, take the Bets. These Bets work on the Come Out roll. These bets may be placed or removed at any time.

12. Buy Bets/Vigorish
Buy Bets (buying the true Odds on or behind a number without going through the Come or Don’t Come Line) are handled the same as Place Bets, however, they are subject to a higher minimum amount.
A charge (vigorish/vig or commission) consisting of 5% of the amount bet is paid to the house in order to make a Buy Bet. The vig amount is rounded down to the nearest dollar. They are paid at true Odds for the Point numbers involved.
An additional 5% vig must be paid if the player wishes to bet again.
For Place Bets, put a Buy lammer on the Bet. For Behind Bets, put a Lay lammer on the Bet.
  Example:
$25 Place Bet on 10 which normally pays 9 to 5
An extra $1 is paid buy the player to Buy the Odds of 2 to 1
10 is rolled
Player is paid $50
Player wishes to keep the $25 on the 10
Player pays an additional $1 to keep the 2 to 1 Odds

13. Take - Pay - Place
All Bets should be taken or paid in order. Losing Bets should be taken first from base to stick. Pay the Pass Line from base to stick. Pay Come and Place Bets from stick to base.
When paying Come Bets, take the Come Bet down with the inside hand and place it on the Come Line in front of the player and pay it with the outside hand by sizing into it. If the player has another Come Bet on the Come Line, pay it without moving either Bet by paying it Off and On.
  Example 1:
    5 Winner 5 is called
Take the Don’t Bets down from behind the 5
Take the Field
Take the Prop Bets (stick person)
Pay the Pass Line
Place the Don’t Come Bets behind the 5

14. Geography
Geography is a very important part of the game as it lets you know which players have a Bet on the table. The layout does not specify where to place the checks so it is very important to place them in the proper areas.
Players should place their Pass Line Bets and Odds directly in front of them.
Field Bets and Come Bets should be placed in front of them.
Place Bets should be laid out according to the chart below for the base dealer on the right side of the box. Dealer bets should be placed on the line closest to the boxman between position 1 and 8.

Place Bets should be laid out according to the chart below for the base dealer on the left side of the box. Dealer bets should be placed on the line closest to the boxman between position 1 and 8.

Come Bets should follow the same guidelines as the Place Bets but instead of being on the line, place them just inside the line. Dealer bets are placed in the center of the box.

Proposition Bets follow the same basic guidelines but since the boxes are smaller, they are positioned a little different. Positions 1, 2, and 3 are along the line closed to the stick, 4 is on the side, 5 is inside, and 6, 7, and 8 are on the line closest to the box. The side of the table that the player is on will determine the side of the box that the Bet is placed. Dealer Bets are placed in the center of the box.

If the layout has enough room to place 4 bets across the line, use the same procedure as Place Bets as shown below. Dealer Bets are still placed in the center of the box.

15. Stick Calls
Stick Calls are made on every roll of the dice. If the stick person cannot see the dice, ask the base person to call the number and then the stick person will make the formal call. The dice should never be touched until the stick person makes the call. Once the call is made, the base dealers may move the dice so that the stick person can retrieve them.
